For specific questions about cataract surgery, please see the cataract surgery FAQ.

How is the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL different from monofocal lenses?

Traditional IOLs are monofocal – that is, they only focus at one distance. As a result, after surgery, you’ll likely need to continue wearing glasses for either near or distance vision, and sometimes for both. The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL differs from traditional IOLs in that it is a multifocal lens that provides a full range of vision from near to far, decreasing your dependence on glasses at all distances.

How does the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL work?

The AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is divided into two main areas – a refractive outer ring that focuses light for distance vision, and a series of apodized diffractive rings in the center of the lens that focus light for near, distance and intermediate vision. Together, these areas provide you with multiple focal points, for excellent vision at all distances.

How is the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL different from the original AcrySof® ReSTOR® lens?

Building on the proven platform of the original ReSTOR® IOL, the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL incorporates several new innovations that can provide you with even greater visual performance. The original AcrySof® ReSTOR® IOL offered excellent near and distance vision, and good vision in the intermediate range. Now, the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® lens offers excellent vision at all distances – close-up, far away and everything in-between. And, with the addition of an advanced aspheric optic, the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL offers better image quality than ever before.

What is an aspheric optic?

An aspheric optic is an advanced lens technology that corrects certain types of imperfections, or aberrations, that can develop on the eye with age. By correcting these imperfections, the aspheric optic of the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL offers patients enhanced image quality.

What is the difference in cost between a traditional lens and the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL?

Insurance policies vary, but Medicare, supplemental insurance and private insurance will typically cover a basic cataract surgery procedure with a conventional IOL. If, however, you decide to have an AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL implanted, there may be additional costs that are not covered by insurance or Medicare. If you’re interested in the added benefits of the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL, you can elect to pay the difference. Contact your doctor's office, or your primary insurance provider, for more information about your policy coverage.

Are there any side effects to the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL?

With the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL, there is a chance that you may experience halos or glare in your vision.

As with any surgical procedure, there are always inherent risks. You and your doctor should consider the potential risks and benefits of cataract surgery, and determine if the AcrySof® IQ ReSTOR® IOL is right for you.
